BA English Language and Global Philosophy & Worldviews
About this course
English language and global philosophy and worldviews is a combination that connects two of the most fundamental and expansive areas of human inquiry. English language study examines how language works as a system, how it is acquired and used, how it varies across social groups and geographical contexts, and how it conveys meaning in ways that are far more complex than everyday communication suggests. Global philosophy and worldviews takes a genuinely cross-cultural approach to the deepest questions: what is real, what is good, what does it mean to be human, and how have different traditions across Africa, China, India, the Middle East, Judaism, Buddhism and beyond approached these questions? At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you extensive opportunities to develop your skills in real and international contexts. You will study the structure, history and social dimensions of the English language, developing the analytical and descriptive tools of linguistics while also considering the role of language in culture, identity and communication. Alongside this, you will engage with a genuinely global range of philosophical and religious traditions, developing the capacity to think carefully across cultural boundaries and to understand the diverse frameworks through which human beings have made sense of existence and value. Graduates from this kind of combined programme pursue careers in education, academic research, the civil service, international organisations, publishing, journalism, communications, interfaith work and the cultural sector. The combination of linguistic analysis and philosophical breadth is particularly valuable in roles that require thoughtful cross-cultural communication and the ability to engage with diverse perspectives. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, philosophy, religious studies, education or related fields.
