BA English Language and Linguistics
About this course
English language and linguistics is the scientific study of language itself: its sounds, structures, meanings, and uses, and the social and historical forces that shape how it changes over time. Unlike literature-focused English degrees, this discipline asks analytical rather than interpretive questions: what sounds does English use, and how do they combine to form words? What grammatical patterns underlie the sentences we produce, and are they universal or specific to English? How does social context influence the way we speak, and how do different varieties of English evolve in different communities? At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time programme addresses all of these questions and more, developing your understanding of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. You will learn to analyse language systematically, using the conceptual tools of linguistics to understand how English works and how it compares to other languages. The programme also explores how social pressure, identity, and history influence the development of language varieties, connecting the structural analysis of language to the broader social and cultural contexts in which communication happens. Essex is a centre of strength in linguistics research, and the programme draws on that research culture throughout. English language and linguistics graduates work in speech and language therapy (with additional postgraduate training), language teaching, publishing, communications, data science and natural language processing, translation, human-computer interaction, and education. The analytical skills developed in the discipline are also valued in the civil service, journalism, and research, wherever the precise understanding and communication of meaning matters. Postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, speech and language therapy, or computational linguistics is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise or pursue more specialised professional or academic roles.
