BA English Language and Linguistics
About this course
English language and linguistics is the scientific study of human language, with a particular focus on the English language in all its variety and complexity. It examines how English is structured at every level, from the sounds of speech and the organisation of words to the structure of sentences and the way meaning is constructed and communicated in context. It also traces the history of the language, examines how it varies across regions, social groups, and registers, and asks what the study of English reveals about human cognition and the nature of language itself. At the University of Sheffield, you will study English language and linguistics over four years full-time, developing rigorous analytical skills in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution and engage with linguistic diversity in a different national context, which is one of the most effective ways to develop a genuinely comparative perspective on how language works. Sheffield's Department of English Language and Linguistics has a strong research reputation, and the programme benefits from staff who are active researchers in fields ranging from historical linguistics to computational approaches to language. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Graduates of English language and linguistics programmes go on to careers in speech and language therapy (with further training), English language teaching, lexicography, publishing and editing, natural language processing in technology, language policy, and research. Teaching, journalism, public relations, and communications roles are also common paths, as the analytical and writing skills the discipline develops are broadly valued. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, speech and language sciences, or related fields.
