About this course
English as a university degree is the study of literature, language, and the ways in which written and spoken texts have shaped and been shaped by human experience across history. It is far more than an exercise in reading books: it is a training in close attention, interpretive rigour, and the capacity to construct and communicate complex arguments about some of the most significant cultural artefacts that human beings have produced. The discipline encompasses creative writing, literary criticism, linguistic analysis, and the study of texts from across centuries and cultures. At the University of Nottingham you will study across three years on a full-time programme. A foundation year is available, providing academic preparation for those whose entry circumstances call for additional grounding before degree-level study. The programme also includes a sandwich year and work placement activity, connecting your English studies to professional contexts in ways that sharpen your understanding of how the skills the degree develops translate into working life.
