BA English
About this course
English as a university degree is the study of literature, language, and the ways in which written and spoken texts have shaped and been shaped by human experience across history. It is far more than an exercise in reading books: it is a training in close attention, interpretive rigour, and the capacity to construct and communicate complex arguments about some of the most significant cultural artefacts that human beings have produced. The discipline encompasses creative writing, literary criticism, linguistic analysis, and the study of texts from across centuries and cultures. At the University of Nottingham you will study across three years on a full-time programme. A foundation year is available, providing academic preparation for those whose entry circumstances call for additional grounding before degree-level study. The programme also includes a sandwich year and work placement activity, connecting your English studies to professional contexts in ways that sharpen your understanding of how the skills the degree develops translate into working life. Nottingham's English department is research-active across a wide range of periods, genres, and theoretical approaches, and you will engage with primary texts alongside critical and theoretical reading that develops your interpretive vocabulary. You will study literature in English from across historical periods, explore the relationship between texts and their contexts, and develop your ability to write analytically and argue persuasively at a high level. English graduates are among the most adaptable in any cohort, because the core skills of the degree, close reading, clear writing, precise argument, and cultural literacy, are valued across almost every sector. Publishing, journalism, teaching, marketing, the civil service, law, communications, and management consultancy are all common career directions. The sandwich year provides a practical bridge to professional employment. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, linguistics, or law, and Nottingham's reputation in the discipline provides a strong foundation for competitive postgraduate applications.
