About this course

English language as an academic discipline is distinct from English literature, though the two are closely related. Where literature focuses on texts and their meanings, English language study examines language itself as a system: how it is structured, how it varies across time, geography, and social context, how children acquire it, how it is used in different communicative situations, and what it reveals about human cognition and society. Linguistics, which sits at the heart of English language study, is a scientific discipline with rigorous methods for analysing sound systems, grammatical structures, word meanings, and the pragmatic rules that govern how we use language in context. At Edinburgh this four-year full-time programme offers an exploration of the fascinating world of linguistics through the lens of English. You will examine the building blocks of language, from phonetics and phonology through morphology, syntax, and semantics to pragmatics and discourse analysis. Real-world language use, from everyday conversation to literary and formal register, is treated as primary data, and you will develop the skills to analyse it systematically. The programme also engages with how languages change over time, how children acquire linguistic competence, and why language varies so markedly across different social groups and geographical communities. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to experience a different linguistic and academic environment and to observe language variation and use from a new perspective. Graduates pursue careers in education, speech and language therapy (with further training), publishing, journalism, communications, language technology, policy, translation, and research. The analytical and communication skills that English language develops are highly transferable, and many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, or language education.
