MA English Language/Italian
About this course
English language and linguistics is the scientific and cultural study of language in all its complexity, asking how English works at the level of sound, structure, and meaning, and what the history and variety of the language tell us about human cognition, social life, and cultural change. Italian, meanwhile, is one of Europe's great languages, with a literary, artistic, and intellectual tradition of extraordinary richness and a contemporary relevance across culture, fashion, design, diplomacy, and commerce. Together, they form a programme that develops both rigorous linguistic analysis and genuine bilingual competence. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year, full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the structures and history of the English language, covering areas such as phonology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and the evolution of English over time and across cultures. Alongside this, you will develop your Italian from an early stage, building towards fluency in speaking, reading, and writing, and engaging with Italian literature, film, and cultural history. A sandwich year is included in the programme, providing the opportunity to undertake a substantive placement, and work placement opportunities are woven throughout the course to develop your professional competence alongside your academic learning. A typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the rigour and breadth of this bilingual degree. Graduates of English language and Italian programmes are well prepared for careers in teaching, translation, publishing, communications, international business, diplomacy, journalism, and the cultural sector. The linguistic analytical skills developed in this degree are increasingly valued in technology industries working with natural language processing and digital content. Postgraduate study in applied linguistics, Italian studies, translation, or education is a natural further step for those wishing to specialise.
