BA English Literature
About this course
English literature is the discipline of reading and making sense of the writing that human beings have produced across centuries and cultures, developing the critical thinking, close reading, and interpretive skills that allow you to engage seriously with what literature does and why it matters. From the medieval poets to the novelists and dramatists of the contemporary world, the texts studied in English literature both reflect the societies that produced them and challenge readers to see beyond their own assumptions and experiences. It is a discipline that rewards close attention and develops a sensitivity to language that is useful in almost every professional and personal context. At the University of Kent this part-time programme invites you to think about how literature shapes society, moving across vast stretches of literary history from Chaucer and Shakespeare through Austen and Woolf to contemporary fiction and poetry. You will develop skills in close reading, literary criticism, historical contextualisation, and the construction of extended written arguments, engaging with different critical approaches and bringing them to bear on a wide range of texts. The part-time format allows you to engage seriously with the subject while balancing other commitments, building a sustained and cumulative understanding of the field across your time on the programme. English literature graduates work in publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, public relations, copywriting, content creation, law, the cultural and heritage sector, and any professional environment where close reading and clear writing are valued. The skills developed through the degree, particularly the ability to analyse complex material, construct well-supported arguments, and communicate clearly, are transferable across a very wide range of careers. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in literature, creative writing, publishing, or education.
