MA English Literature
About this course
English literature at degree level asks you to do far more than read widely, though reading widely matters enormously. It asks you to read with precision, to understand how form, language, and context shape meaning, to engage with the critical and theoretical frameworks that have shaped how we interpret literary works, and to construct arguments that can withstand rigorous scrutiny. It is a discipline that takes seriously both the aesthetic pleasure of literature and the intellectual challenge of understanding it. At Glasgow you will encounter literature in English from the early modern period to the postmodern, engaging with the full range of genres, periods, and critical approaches that make the subject genuinely expansive. The programme brings expertise in American, Irish, and postcolonial literatures alongside British writing, and it treats the relationship between literature and other arts, media, and sciences as a live and interesting question rather than a settled one. You will engage with critical theory and develop your own critical voice, and you will have the opportunity to explore creative writing alongside your critical studies. The four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study literature in another national context and to experience the way in which different academic traditions approach the subject. English literature graduates are found in almost every sector because what the degree develops, the ability to read carefully, think independently, and write with clarity and precision, is valuable almost everywhere. Careers in publishing, journalism, broadcasting, the civil service, education, law, marketing, communications, and the arts are all well-established routes. Many students continue to postgraduate study in English, creative writing, or related humanities fields.
