BA English Literature
About this course
English literature invites you to read some of the most significant writing in the language with care and rigour, developing the analytical skills, historical knowledge and critical vocabulary to understand literary works both as aesthetic objects and as products of particular times and places. It is a discipline that takes reading seriously as an intellectual act, requiring attentiveness to how language works, not just what it says. Newcastle University's three-year full-time English literature programme is enriched by a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad and an embedded work placement, making it an unusually well-rounded degree. The academic content covers poetry, fiction and drama from across the literary tradition, and you will develop the ability to read closely, to situate texts within their cultural and historical contexts and to write with clarity and analytical precision. The placement year introduces a professional dimension that is valuable both in its own right and in the way it deepens your understanding of how literary and communication skills translate into real-world settings. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to experience a different academic environment and to develop the independence and adaptability that international study builds. The work placement element further expands your professional experience and the connections you make during your degree. The combination of serious literary study with professional and international experience produces graduates who are analytically capable, adaptable and able to articulate the value of their education clearly to employers. Graduates work in publishing, journalism, broadcasting, education, the arts, law, the civil service, marketing, public relations and many other fields where strong reading, research and communication skills are central. The degree is also an excellent foundation for postgraduate study in English, creative writing, cultural studies, education or any field that rewards intellectual agility and the ability to work carefully with complex material.
