About this course

English studies is an academic discipline concerned with how language, literature, and culture intersect, examining the texts through which human experience is most powerfully expressed and situating them within the historical, critical, and cultural contexts that give them meaning. At its core it trains you to read carefully and critically, to construct arguments about what texts mean and how they work, and to communicate those arguments in clear, well-crafted prose. These are skills with genuine breadth of application, valued across almost every profession that deals in ideas and language. At Stirling you will study this four-year full-time degree, which includes a year abroad. Stirling has a distinctive approach to English studies that combines attention to literary tradition with engagement with newer and more global forms of writing, and that takes seriously the Scottish and international dimensions of literary culture alongside the English literary canon. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to encounter English studies in a different national and academic context, deepening your comparative perspective on literature, language, and culture. Across the four years you will develop strong close-reading skills, the ability to work with critical theory, and the research and writing abilities that sustained literary study demands. English studies graduates enter careers across a wide range of sectors. Publishing, journalism, copywriting, teaching, arts administration, heritage, broadcasting, and the civil service are among the most common destinations, and the communication and analytical skills the degree develops are valued across many more. Education, in particular, is a major pathway, with many graduates pursuing initial teacher training in English after their degree. Postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, cultural studies, or media is a natural next step for those who wish to develop their expertise further or pursue academic or creative careers.
