BA English
About this course
English as a degree subject is the study of literature written in English, from the earliest medieval texts to contemporary writing from around the world. It asks how texts produce meaning, how they are shaped by and in turn act upon their historical and cultural contexts, and what reading carefully and critically reveals about language, imagination, and human experience. The discipline trains you to engage with the full complexity of literary works, to argue with evidence and rigour, and to write about challenging ideas with precision and style. At the University of Huddersfield, this programme is offered on a part-time basis and includes both a sandwich year element and a work placement, making it one of the more practically connected part-time English programmes available. The part-time mode allows students to balance study with employment or other commitments while still pursuing a full and demanding engagement with the subject. The sandwich year and placement give you the opportunity to apply your developing analytical and communication skills in a professional context, which adds value to the degree and helps you to understand how the capacities English develops translate into working environments. You will engage with literature across historical periods and genres, developing close reading skills, the ability to work with literary theory, and the habit of constructing well-evidenced critical arguments. The programme is taught in Huddersfield, a town with a growing creative and cultural sector. English develops written communication, critical analysis, and interpretive agility in ways that are highly transferable. Employers across many sectors value graduates who can read carefully, argue convincingly, and write well. Graduates work in publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, marketing and communications, the arts, and the charity sector. The combination of intellectual rigour and practical experience provided by the placement makes Huddersfield graduates particularly well prepared for working life. Many also continue to postgraduate study in literature, creative writing, or education.
