English literature is one of the richest intellectual disciplines available, engaging you with the full range of human experience as expressed through language and narrative across more than a thousand years of writing in English. It develops close reading and critical thinking, the ability to construct rigorous arguments from evidence, and the capacity to understand texts in their historical and cultural contexts. English literature at Liverpool combines these core disciplines with the flexibility to weight your degree toward the areas of the subject that most engage you, and the opportunity to explore them in an intellectually vibrant urban setting. This three-year programme at the University of Liverpool allows you to adapt the weighting of your studies over time, keeping your options open as your interests develop. You will study across literary periods and genres, engaging with poetry, fiction, drama, and non-fiction in ways that develop both your interpretive abilities and your skill as a writer of critical prose. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, alongside embedded work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience and international exposure that enrich both your academic studies and your graduate profile. English literature graduates are among the most versatile in the humanities labour market. The combination of analytical rigour, strong writing, and cultural literacy the degree develops is valued across journalism, publishing, law, the civil service, education, communications, marketing, broadcasting, arts administration, and a very wide range of other fields. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, journalism, law, or related fields, while others move directly into professional roles where the ability to read closely, argue clearly, and write well is at a premium.
