BA English with Creative Writing
About this course
English with creative writing brings together the critical study of literature with the practice of writing, recognising that reading well and writing well are deeply connected activities. Reading literature carefully, attending to how it works and what it does, is one of the best forms of training for a writer. And writing, the sustained attempt to find the right words and forms for your own ideas and experiences, makes you a more attentive and purposeful reader. Studying this combination part time at Goldsmiths, University of London gives you access to one of the most distinguished creative writing and English programmes in the country, with a long tradition of producing writers who have gone on to significant careers. You will study literary texts across periods and genres, developing skills in close reading, interpretation, and critical analysis alongside the practice of writing in forms that might include fiction, poetry, non-fiction, or drama. Workshops, in which you share your own work and respond to others', are central to the creative writing element, developing your ability to reflect critically on your own practice and to give and receive constructive feedback. The part-time format makes the programme accessible to those with professional commitments, caring responsibilities, or other reasons for not studying full time. Goldsmiths' creative community and its connections to the London literary world provide an unusually rich environment for developing your writing. Graduates go on to careers as writers, editors, journalists, teachers, arts administrators, and literary agents, as well as in publishing, broadcasting, and the creative industries more broadly. The critical skills developed in English are valued across many professional contexts, and the creative writing practice is central to any career in which original communication matters.
