BA English with TESOL
About this course
English with TESOL brings together two complementary areas of study: the academic study of the English language, its history, structure, and literary dimensions, and the professional discipline of teaching English to speakers of other languages. TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and it is a field of genuine global importance. English is the most widely taught second language in the world, and skilled teachers and materials developers are in demand across every continent, in schools, universities, language centres, and corporate training programmes. At the University of Bedfordshire you will study aspects of English linguistics and literature alongside the theoretical and practical foundations of language teaching. You will explore how language is acquired, how it varies across different communities and contexts, and how to design teaching approaches and materials that work for learners at different stages. The programme is built to develop both your knowledge of the language itself and your professional skills as an educator or practitioner. It leads towards a professional qualification relevant to teaching English as a second or foreign language, and it also prepares you for related roles such as materials development, curriculum design, and research in language education. The full degree runs over three years on a full-time basis. You will develop strong analytical skills in relation to language alongside strong practical skills in relation to teaching and communication. The combination of academic and professional elements means you graduate with both depth of knowledge and readiness for the workplace. Graduates go on to teach English in UK schools, language schools, and higher education institutions, as well as in countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. The degree also opens routes into educational publishing, curriculum development, language research, and further postgraduate study in applied linguistics, education, or English language teaching. It is a qualification with genuine international reach.
