About this course

Environment and sustainability is a field that addresses the most pressing questions of our time: how human activity is altering natural systems, what the consequences of those alterations are, and how we can manage our relationship with the natural world more wisely and equitably. It draws on ecology, earth science, geography, economics, and social science to examine environmental change across scales from local ecosystems to global climate systems, and to evaluate the policies, technologies, and behaviours that can move us towards more sustainable ways of living. At Birkbeck College, which has a long tradition of accessible higher education and a teaching team of internationally recognised researchers, this four-year programme includes a foundation year to support students who need a structured entry point into degree-level scientific study. You will develop a deep understanding of what drives environmental change, including the physical and biological processes involved, and how natural systems can be managed under unprecedented pressure. The programme combines theoretical understanding with substantial practical experience, developing skills in data collection, analysis, geographical information systems, and environmental assessment that are valued across environmental professions. Graduates from environment and sustainability programmes work in environmental consultancy, local and national government, conservation organisations, environmental agencies, international development, sustainability management in business, and the growing green economy sector. Roles in environmental impact assessment, sustainability reporting, ecological monitoring, and policy analysis are all common career destinations. The urgency of the environmental challenges facing the world means demand for graduates with this knowledge is growing. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in environmental science, sustainability, ecology, or policy, developing specialist expertise for research or professional leadership in the field.
