BSc Environmental Geoscience
About this course
Environmental geoscience applies the tools of geology, geophysics, and physical geography to the understanding of environmental systems and the challenges arising from human interaction with the Earth. The discipline examines how soils, water, landforms, and geological materials behave under natural and anthropogenic pressures, and it provides the scientific foundation for environmental assessment, land management, contamination remediation, natural hazard evaluation, and resource management. As concern about environmental degradation, climate change, and resource scarcity has intensified, environmental geoscientists have become increasingly central to planning, regulation, and consulting in the built and natural environment. At the University of Liverpool, this three-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement experience, all of which give it a strong professional and international character alongside the academic content. You will develop quantitative skills in geological mapping, soil and water analysis, remote sensing and GIS, and environmental modelling, alongside a solid grounding in earth processes, stratigraphy, and the geochemical and geophysical methods used to characterise and monitor environmental systems. Field work is an important part of the curriculum, placing you in real environmental settings where you apply your skills in collecting, recording, and interpreting data. The sandwich placement and work placements give you professional experience in environmental consultancy, government agencies, or research organisations, while the year abroad provides an international scientific perspective that is increasingly relevant in a discipline concerned with global environmental systems. Graduates work in environmental consultancy, site investigation and remediation, hydrogeology, natural hazard assessment, government environmental agencies, and academic research. Many pursue professional chartership with the Geological Society or the Institution of Environmental Sciences. Postgraduate study in environmental geoscience, hydrogeology, or related earth and environmental sciences is available for those seeking advanced expertise or research careers.
