BSc Environmental Science with International Foundation Year
About this course
Environmental science applies the methods and thinking of the natural sciences to the challenges facing the Earth's systems, from climate change and biodiversity loss to water quality, soil health, and pollution. It is an inherently interdisciplinary subject, drawing on biology, chemistry, geology, ecology, and earth science to understand how natural and human-influenced processes interact. As the urgency of environmental challenges grows, the need for graduates who combine scientific rigour with practical problem-solving skills has never been greater. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of Reading includes an International Foundation Year, which gives students who need additional preparation a thorough grounding in the language, study skills, and subject knowledge required before entering the main degree content. Reading has strong research strengths in environmental science and is situated in a region with diverse natural and managed landscapes that provide rich contexts for fieldwork and study. Across the programme you will examine the Earth's physical and biological systems, investigate the drivers and consequences of environmental change, and develop the practical and analytical skills needed to address real environmental problems. Graduates pursue careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, government environmental agencies, planning, renewable energy, water management, and international environmental organisations. The scientific foundation the degree provides also supports entry into roles in research, education, and policy development. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, climate science, or related disciplines, building specialised expertise for roles in academic research, advanced consultancy, or international environmental governance.
