MSci Environmental Sciences with a Year Abroad
About this course
Environmental sciences is the interdisciplinary study of the natural environment and the ways in which human activity affects it. It draws on biology, chemistry, physics, geography, and the social sciences to address questions about how ecosystems function, how pollution and climate change are altering the physical world, how biodiversity is threatened, and what approaches to environmental management and policy might reduce harm and promote sustainability. It is a discipline of genuine urgency, concerned with the scientific foundations of the most pressing long-term challenges facing human societies and the planet they inhabit. At the University of East Anglia, environmental sciences is studied with a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with environmental issues and approaches in a different national context. UEA has one of the most distinguished research environments in environmental science in the world, rooted in the Climatic Research Unit and the School of Environmental Sciences, and the programme benefits from engagement with scientists working on the frontier of climate, ecology, and environmental policy research. The curriculum covers atmospheric science and climate, ecology and conservation biology, soil science and hydrology, environmental chemistry, environmental assessment and management, and the policy and governance frameworks through which societies attempt to manage environmental challenges. Quantitative and field research methods are central to the programme, and you will develop practical skills in environmental monitoring, data analysis, and scientific communication. Graduates from environmental sciences programmes enter careers across the environmental, public, and private sectors. Environmental consultancy, ecological surveying, environmental impact assessment, and roles in regulatory agencies such as the Environment Agency are direct applications of the degree. Government departments, local authorities, and international organisations working on climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development are further destinations. Research roles in academic institutions, national environmental agencies, and NGOs are open to graduates who continue to postgraduate study. The year abroad develops an international perspective that is valuable in a field where environmental challenges are inherently cross-border. Many graduates pursue master's degrees in specialist areas of environmental science or in related disciplines such as conservation, climate change, and environmental policy.
