BA Ethics, Religion and Philosophy
About this course
Ethics, religion, and philosophy together form one of the oldest and most enduring areas of human intellectual inquiry, asking questions that no other discipline is equipped to answer in quite the same way: what do we owe one another, what is the good life, what can we know and how, and what role has religion played in shaping human values, culture, and society? These questions are not merely academic. They surface in medicine, law, politics, environmental debate, and everyday moral decision-making, and the capacity to engage with them rigorously is an increasingly valuable skill. At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year full-time BA in Ethics, Religion and Philosophy is designed for those who want to engage seriously with the rich philosophical and religious traditions of human thought and to develop as independent, reflective, and articulate thinkers. You will explore the history of philosophy, ethical theory, the study of religious traditions, and the relationships between religion, culture, and society, developing the analytical and communicative skills needed to engage with complex ideas and to communicate about them clearly and persuasively. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you professional experience alongside your academic development and helping you to see how philosophical and ethical thinking applies in real-world contexts. Graduates from ethics, religion, and philosophy programmes move into careers in education, journalism, publishing, the civil service, law, healthcare ethics, social work, the charity sector, and broadcasting. The ability to think rigorously about difficult questions, to engage with diversity of belief and value, and to communicate complex ideas accessibly is valued in many professional contexts. Roles in interfaith dialogue, ethics consultation, policy research, and religious organisations are further destinations. Postgraduate study in philosophy, ethics, theology, or law is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
