BA European Studies (German pathway) with a year abroad
About this course
European Studies explores the history, politics, cultures, and institutions of the European continent, bringing together the analytical tools of political science, history, and international relations to make sense of one of the world's most complex and consequential regional organisations. The German pathway adds a language dimension that makes this academic understanding active: by developing your German, you gain the ability to engage with European affairs not just from an Anglophone perspective but from within the culture that has shaped European politics, philosophy, and economics as profoundly as any other. At King's College London this four-year, full-time BA teaches you the history and politics of Europe while equipping you with the German language skills to understand the European project from a German perspective. You will spend a year studying in German at a university in Berlin, an experience that combines deep cultural immersion with rigorous academic study in one of Europe's most important capitals. This prolonged engagement with German-speaking life and scholarship develops a level of fluency and cultural confidence that classroom study alone cannot replicate. You will graduate as both a German speaker and an expert in European Studies, with a distinctive combination of analytical and linguistic competencies. Graduates with European Studies and German are exceptionally well placed for careers in diplomacy, European institutions, the civil service, journalism, think tanks, international business, and any organisation where understanding the European political landscape and engaging with German-speaking colleagues or partners is valuable. Many move into roles at the European Commission, European Parliament, international law firms, multinational companies, or government departments with European policy responsibilities. Postgraduate study in European politics, German studies, international relations, or law is a natural next step for those who want to develop specialist expertise.
