BA European Studies with German
About this course
European Studies with German is a degree that takes seriously the claim made in any news bulletin or serious newspaper: that the future of Europe is one of the most consequential geopolitical questions of our time. Switch on the news any day of the week and you are confronted with the challenges and contradictions of modern Europe, from debates about the nature and future of the European Union to questions of migration, democratic backsliding, energy security, and the resurgence of nationalist politics. Few people, however, truly understand the complex phenomenon that is modern Europe, with its interweaving of national histories, linguistic diversity, supranational institutions, and shared but contested values. This degree equips you to understand it, in depth and on its own terms. At the University of Essex, this four-year full-time programme combines the interdisciplinary study of European politics, history, and culture with a systematic development of German language competence. German is both the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and the key to one of Europe's most influential intellectual, literary, and political traditions. You will study European integration, the politics of European states, the history of the continent from the twentieth century to the present, and the cultural dimensions of European identity, alongside developing your German to a level that allows you to engage with German-language sources, media, and professional contexts directly. The programme develops your comparative analytical skills, your understanding of how European institutions work, and your ability to engage with Europe across its linguistic and cultural diversity. Graduates pursue careers in European and international organisations, the civil service, journalism, law, business, education, and the voluntary sector. Many go on to postgraduate study in European studies, political science, or German. The combination of European expertise and German language competence is particularly valued in careers with a European dimension.
