BSc Fashion Buying and Merchandising
About this course
Fashion buying and merchandising sits at the commercial heart of the fashion industry, responsible for the critical decisions about what products to select, how many to buy, what to pay for them, and how to present and price them for sale. Buyers and merchandisers shape the ranges that appear in stores and online, balancing creative trend instinct with rigorous financial planning and supply chain management. Getting those decisions right determines whether a fashion business is profitable, and the roles sit at the point where creativity and commerce are most directly in tension. At Manchester Metropolitan you will study this three-year full-time degree, developing both the commercial strategy and the product knowledge that buying and merchandising careers demand. You will explore how products are planned, sourced, and sold, learning to analyse consumer behaviour, interpret trend data, manage supplier relationships, negotiate prices, and build range plans that are financially viable as well as commercially exciting. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, which are particularly important in an industry where industry experience is a major factor in graduate employability. Manchester's connections to the fashion and retail industries provide further opportunities for professional engagement. Graduates of fashion buying and merchandising work for retailers, brands, buying offices, and wholesale businesses across the fashion sector, in roles spanning junior buyer, allocator, merchandising analyst, and supply chain coordinator. The commercial and analytical skills the degree develops are also transferable to retail more broadly and to data-driven roles in marketing, logistics, and operations. Many graduates move into senior buying and merchandising roles over the course of their careers, eventually directing the ranges and trading strategies of significant retail organisations. Postgraduate study in fashion management, retail, or business is also an option for those who wish to develop their commercial expertise further.
