BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is a discipline that sits at the intersection of visual culture, material practice, and cultural critique. A garment is never just clothing: it is an expression of identity, a product of manufacturing decisions, a response to cultural codes and historical moments, and a participant in the global systems of production and consumption that raise some of the most pressing ethical and environmental questions of our time. Studying fashion design seriously means engaging with all of these dimensions alongside the technical and creative skills that the practice itself demands. At Leeds Arts University, this three-year full-time programme develops your creative and technical abilities within a framework that takes historical and contemporary context seriously. You will explore the multifaceted nature of fashion design, investigating global fashion narratives, the role of gender, sustainable practice, and ethical responsibility alongside the core skills of drawing, pattern cutting, garment construction, and collection development. The programme encourages you to situate your creative work within wider cultural and social debates, developing your capacity for critical reflection alongside your technical confidence. Leeds Arts University is one of the few higher education institutions in the UK dedicated entirely to art and design, which creates a concentrated creative environment that shapes the culture of learning. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points, and the programme is studied full time. Graduates from fashion design programmes go on to work as fashion designers, fashion stylists, buyers, textile designers, costume designers, fashion journalists, and creative directors, as well as in fashion marketing, sustainable fashion consultancy, and independent creative practice. Further study at postgraduate level in fashion design, fashion business, or sustainable fashion is available for those who wish to extend their practice or specialise further.
