BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is a discipline that combines creative vision with technical craft, commercial awareness, and an understanding of the cultural forces that shape what people wear and how they present themselves to the world. The fashion designer's work begins with research and concept development, moves through drawing and pattern-making to the creation of actual garments, and ends in the context of shows, lookbooks, retail environments, and the complex supply chains that bring clothing from studio to consumer. It is a discipline that rewards both aesthetic boldness and meticulous craft, and successful designers need to develop both. At Nottingham Trent University, fashion design is studied within one of the UK's most highly regarded fashion schools, which has a long record of producing graduates who go on to significant careers in the industry. Over three years of full-time study, you will develop your creative practice through studio projects that challenge you to research, experiment, design, and make. You will build technical skills in pattern cutting, garment construction, and the use of materials, alongside conceptual and research skills that ground your design work in a genuine understanding of fashion's cultural and historical contexts. Presentation skills, professional portfolio development, and an awareness of the fashion industry's commercial structures are also central to the programme. Nottingham's close links with the industry provide opportunities for live briefs, industry visits, and encounters with working fashion professionals throughout the degree. Graduates in fashion design from NTU go on to a wide range of careers within and alongside the industry. Working as a fashion designer, with established brands or independently, is the most direct path. Pattern cutting and garment technology roles support the technical production side of the industry. Styling, fashion communication, and buying and merchandising are further destinations for those whose interests develop in those directions. Many graduates start their own labels or develop freelance practices, particularly in the age of direct-to-consumer digital retail. Fashion education is another route for those who want to teach. Postgraduate study in fashion design or fashion business is an option for those who want to develop their practice or business understanding to a higher level.
