BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is a discipline that combines creative vision with the technical knowledge to realise that vision in wearable form. It sits at the intersection of art, craft, culture, and commerce, demanding both the imaginative capacity to originate ideas and the practical skills to execute them through pattern cutting, construction, and an understanding of materials and textiles. At its best it is a form of communication as powerful as any other visual art, shaping how people understand identity, body, and time through the clothes they choose to wear. At the University of Bedfordshire, this three-year programme encourages you to think outside conventional boundaries, finding creative approaches and negotiating between conceptual and wearable design. Alongside open and creative briefs that stimulate experimentation, you will develop technical skills in textile work, pattern cutting, and three-dimensional garment design using specialist software, with a strong emphasis on digital design skills throughout. The academic team draws on significant industry experience and guides you through a process of creative discovery that takes you from initial concept through to finished garment. Graduates from fashion design programmes pursue careers across the full spectrum of the industry. Roles as fashion designers, pattern cutters, garment technologists, stylists, fashion editors, buyers, product developers, and visual merchandisers are all common destinations. The technical and digital skills you develop are also applicable to costume design for film, television and theatre, and to adjacent fields such as textile design, accessories, and sustainable fashion production. Many graduates build freelance careers or launch their own labels, while others join design studios, fashion houses, retailers, or brands at various scales. Further study at postgraduate level provides a route to more specialist or research-oriented practice.
