BA Fashion Journalism
About this course
Fashion journalism occupies a space where visual culture, commercial industry, and critical writing meet. It is concerned not just with reporting on clothes but with understanding fashion as a cultural and economic phenomenon: how trends emerge and are communicated, how the industry operates, and how fashion intersects with identity, gender, race, and politics. Fashion journalists need both the technical skills of writing and multimedia communication and a deep familiarity with the industry they cover. At the University of Sunderland, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for a career as a fashion journalist or stylist by developing skills in catwalk reporting, trend forecasting, and editorial styling across print and digital formats. You will learn to produce the kind of content that characterises fashion media, from long-form critical writing to fast-turnaround digital coverage, and you will develop your creative and visual sensibility alongside your journalistic craft. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you international fashion industry exposure and broadening your understanding of how fashion media operates in different markets. You will also have the opportunity to work with Fashion North, the university's own fashion publication. Entry typically requires around 104 UCAS tariff points. Graduates go on to work as fashion writers, editors, stylists, content creators, brand communicators, and social media managers for magazines, newspapers, digital platforms, fashion brands, and PR agencies. The blend of creative and critical skills the degree develops is also valuable in marketing, communications, and the broader creative industries.
