BA Fashion
About this course
Fashion as a creative discipline is far more than the production of clothing: it is a practice concerned with identity, culture, the body, economics, and the visual languages through which societies signal status, belonging, and aspiration. Designers work at the intersection of artistic vision and commercial reality, creating collections that are both original and wearable, both culturally resonant and materially coherent. A fashion degree at a serious institution asks you to develop the design skills, the critical thinking, and the cultural awareness that distinguish designers who shape the field from those who merely follow it. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme puts you at the heart of a creative community in which taking risks and experimenting are not just permitted but expected. You will design original, inspiring collections that reflect a genuine creative voice, building your technical skills in pattern cutting, garment construction, textiles, and digital design methods alongside a rigorous engagement with fashion history, theory, and culture. A year abroad is built into the programme, broadening your exposure to different fashion cultures and design traditions and adding international experience to your creative portfolio. Edinburgh's position as a city with significant arts, culture, and heritage resources provides a rich context for creative study. Fashion graduates go on to work as fashion designers, creative directors, stylists, pattern cutters, buyers, merchandisers, fashion editors, and product developers, as well as in brand management, fashion journalism, retail, and the growing sustainable fashion sector. Many graduates build independent practices or work with established fashion houses in the UK and internationally. Postgraduate study in fashion design, fashion management, or textile design is a natural progression for those who want to develop their creative or commercial expertise further.
