BA Film and Media
About this course
Film and media studies addresses the full landscape of contemporary screen culture, from the history of cinema and the art of the moving image to television, social media, video games, and the digital platforms that have transformed how stories, ideas, and entertainment reach their audiences. It is a discipline that combines close analysis of texts with contextual understanding of the industries, technologies, and social forces that produce them, developing a critical and culturally informed perspective on the media that saturates modern life. At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time programme covers the key issues in film, media, and culture, from digital and cult media to questions of gender, celebrity, and representation, across film, television, social media, and video games. You will study the history and theory of cinema and media, developing your analytical skills through close reading of texts and engagement with the critical frameworks that media studies deploys. The programme helps you identify and focus on your own interests within the broad field, whether that means developing skills in journalism, filmmaking, or screenwriting alongside your critical studies. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points. Graduates from film and media programmes go on to careers in broadcasting, digital content creation, journalism, screenwriting, film programming, cultural journalism, arts administration, public relations, and education. The analytical skills in critical reading, research, and communication that the degree develops are valuable across many sectors. Further study at postgraduate level in film studies, media studies, screenwriting, or digital media is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
