About this course

Film and modern languages is a combination that opens up the visual cultures of the world through both the close study of cinema and a deep engagement with another language and the society that produces it. Film studies examines how moving images work: how meaning is constructed through editing, cinematography, sound, and narrative, and how cinema relates to the cultural, political, and historical contexts in which it is made and received. A modern language adds the dimension of direct access to the cinematic, literary, and social cultures of another country, allowing you to engage with film and culture from the inside rather than only as an outside observer. At the University of Bristol you can combine film and television studies with French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, building language proficiency alongside your critical study of cinema. The four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in which you can gain work experience in a professional context, alongside work placement opportunities that connect academic study to careers in the creative and media industries. You will develop critical frameworks for analysing film alongside the linguistic and cultural competence that allows you to work with foreign-language films and cultural texts in their original contexts. Graduates from film and modern languages programmes work in film production, television and broadcasting, journalism, arts marketing, cultural organisations, and international media. Roles in distribution, programming, festival management, criticism, and education are also common destinations. The combination of critical analysis and language skills is valued in international business, diplomacy, and any career that operates across cultural boundaries. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in film, media studies, cultural studies, or a language and area studies field.
