BA Film and Television Studies and English
About this course
Film and television studies and English is a degree that connects the critical study of screen media with the study of literary and cultural traditions in English. Film and television studies asks how moving image media work: how stories are told through editing, cinematography, sound, and performance; how genres develop and are subverted; how the screen represents society, history, and the imagination; and how audiences make sense of what they watch. English develops the skills of close reading, historical contextualisation, and critical argument that are directly transferable to the analysis of any medium, including the moving image. At Brunel University London, this full-time, three-year degree allows you to combine practice and theory in both disciplines. On the screen side, you will study audio-visual practices alongside theoretical modules that address how screen media have been theorised and understood historically and in the present. On the English side, you will study the major historical periods of English literature through to recent poetry, fiction, and drama, developing the critical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills that the degree programme describes as essential to professional life. The flexibility of the programme allows you to combine theory and practice modules in a way that reflects your own interests and aspirations. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points. Graduates from film and television studies and English programmes move into a wide range of creative, critical, and professional roles. Television, film, and digital media production, journalism, publishing, arts criticism, copywriting, education, broadcasting, and the cultural sector are all natural destinations. The combination of practical screen skills and the critical and writing training of English produces graduates with a versatile profile that is valued in organisations working across the creative and media industries. Postgraduate study in film, media, English, or creative writing provides natural options for those who wish to go further.
