MA Film and Visual Culture and Spanish & Latin American Studies
About this course
Film and visual culture is a discipline that studies the moving image in all its forms, from early cinema to digital media, examining how films are made, how they create meaning, and how they reflect and shape the societies that produce and consume them. It draws on film theory, cultural history, and aesthetic analysis to develop close reading skills and a critical understanding of visual media as a cultural force. Pairing this with Spanish and Latin American studies adds a rich linguistic and cultural dimension, opening access to one of the most vibrant and diverse cinematic and cultural traditions in the world. This five-year full-time degree at the University of Aberdeen combines rigorous training in the history and theory of the moving image with high-level study of Spanish language, alongside the literature, history, and cultures of Spain and Latin America, including Latin American cinema as a subject in its own right. You will develop analytical skills in reading visual texts and situating them within their cultural and historical contexts, while also building Spanish to a level that enables genuine scholarly and professional engagement with Spanish-language culture. The programme takes seriously the specificity of Latin American cultural production, treating it not as peripheral to a European canon but as a tradition with its own richness and critical significance. A typical entry tariff of 184 points applies. Graduates from this programme carry a distinctive combination of visual literacy, critical theory, and language proficiency. Careers in film and media production, journalism, cultural criticism, broadcasting, publishing, arts administration, and international cultural organisations are natural destinations. The language element opens additional paths in international business, translation, the foreign office, and roles connected to Spain and Latin America. Postgraduate study in film studies, Hispanic studies, cultural studies, or media is a well-trodden continuation.
