About this course

Film at Edinburgh Napier University is a four-year degree that provides an in-depth technical and creative education in the full spectrum of filmmaking, from scriptwriting and directing through to cinematography, editing, sound design, and production design. It treats film as both a craft and an art form, developing the technical proficiency needed to work in professional production alongside the critical and conceptual understanding that distinguishes serious filmmakers from competent technicians. The programme includes a year abroad, extending your encounter with different film cultures and practices. From the outset you will be encouraged to think critically and creatively, developing your technical skills through the craft of screenwriting, producing, directing, documentary filmmaking, and the many other roles that industrial and independent filmmaking requires. The programme covers both commercial production practices and the experimental and artistic traditions that have shaped world cinema, preparing you to work across the breadth of what film can be and do. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to engage with different cinematic traditions and filmmaking environments, building your cultural perspective and professional network. A typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects a selective admissions standard for a technically and creatively demanding programme. Graduates from film programmes at Napier move into careers in film and television production, documentary filmmaking, commercial video production, post-production editing and sound, production design, and the broader creative media industries. Many build varied careers combining different filmmaking roles or work across film, television, and digital media. Some continue to postgraduate study in film production or film studies, developing their practice or critical understanding to an advanced level.
