BA Film Production
About this course
Film production is the craft and art of making moving image work for cinema, television, and digital platforms. It encompasses the full range of production disciplines, from development, scripting, and pre-production planning through to cinematography, directing, editing, sound design, and post-production, as well as the producing skills needed to manage budgets, schedules, and creative teams. Studying film production at degree level means developing both practical expertise and a critical understanding of screen media, learning from the history of cinema and from the analytical frameworks that allow you to understand how film communicates and why. At Brunel University London, this three-year full-time programme shares a common first year with the Film and Television Studies BA, giving you the opportunity to study video practice alongside a range of modules that focus on how screen media have been theorised and analysed. This integration of practical production skills with critical and theoretical study is a strength of the programme, developing graduates who can both make work and talk about it with intelligence and rigour. You will develop technical skills across the range of production disciplines while also engaging with the history and theory of cinema in ways that inform and deepen your creative practice. Film production graduates pursue careers across the film and television industries in the UK and internationally. Many work as producers, directors, editors, cinematographers, production managers, or in specialist post-production roles. The British film and television industry is one of the most significant in the world, and London in particular offers unusually rich opportunities for early-career film practitioners. The analytical and communication skills developed alongside practical expertise also transfer into roles in broadcasting, digital media, advertising, and corporate film production. Postgraduate study in film production, screen studies, or a specialist production discipline is available for those wishing to develop their practice further or pursue research.
