BA Film Studies and English Literature with a Year Abroad
About this course
Film studies and English literature together explore two of the most significant narrative media of the modern world, asking how stories are told, what they mean, and how they shape the cultures that produce and consume them. English literature brings a tradition of close textual analysis developed over centuries of engagement with novels, poetry, and drama, while film studies extends those analytical tools to the moving image, examining how cinema uses visual language, sound, editing, and performance to construct meaning. The two disciplines illuminate each other: literary criticism sharpens your reading of films, while film theory brings new perspectives to the analysis of texts. At the University of East Anglia, this four-year, full-time degree gives you the opportunity to spend your third year studying abroad at one of UEA's partner institutions across the globe, making international experience an integral part of your education. That year abroad allows you to encounter film and literary cultures from a different national perspective, and to develop the independence and adaptability that come from extended immersion in a different academic environment. At UEA you will engage with literature and cinema across a wide range of periods, movements, and national traditions, developing analytical precision, strong written argument, and the ability to think across media. Graduates from film studies and English literature programmes work in journalism, criticism, publishing, arts administration, film and television production, education, communications, and the cultural sector more broadly. The ability to read, analyse, and communicate about complex texts and images is valued across many professional contexts. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in film studies, literature, cultural studies, or journalism, building on their dual expertise for research or specialist professional careers.
