About this course

Film studies and German is a combination that opens two richly complementary cultural traditions. Film studies takes cinema seriously as an art form, a cultural institution, and a vehicle for ideology and meaning, drawing on critical theory, history, and close analysis to examine how moving images work and what they do in the world. German brings access to one of Europe's most important languages and to a literary and philosophical tradition of immense depth, as well as to the distinctive German cinema of the twentieth century, from Weimar expressionism through New German Cinema to contemporary German-language film. Together these subjects offer both breadth of cultural reference and rigorous analytical method. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree develops your engagement with global film cultures alongside a deep and advancing study of German language and culture. In film studies you will examine the history of cinema, explore critical and theoretical frameworks for understanding film, and develop the close viewing and analytical writing skills that the discipline requires. In German you will build your language proficiency to an advanced level while studying literature, philosophy, history, and cultural contexts across the German-speaking world. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you direct immersion in a German-speaking country and significantly deepening your linguistic and cultural understanding. You will develop sophisticated reading, viewing, and interpretive skills, alongside the capacity to engage with complex ideas in more than one language. These capacities are valued in many professional contexts where critical thinking and cultural fluency matter. Graduates move into careers in journalism, broadcasting, publishing, cultural organisations, teaching, translation, film and television production, international business, and the civil service. The combination of language proficiency and critical media literacy is increasingly sought after. Postgraduate study in film studies, German, or related disciplines is a natural route for those drawn to research or further specialisation.
