BA Film Studies
About this course
Film studies examines cinema as one of the most powerful cultural, artistic and ideological forces of the modern era. It asks how films create meaning through their narrative structures, visual language, sound design and editing, and it situates those films within the social, historical and political contexts that produce them and that they in turn help to shape. Film is not a neutral medium: the choices made by directors, studios and distributors reflect and influence how societies understand themselves, and film studies gives you the analytical tools to read those choices critically. At the University of Essex you will engage with cinema as both an art form and a social phenomenon, exploring questions of how film affects us individually and collectively, how moving images shape our interpretations of the world, and how visual media participate in the construction of communities, nations and identities. The four-year full-time programme develops your ability to analyse a wide range of cinematic traditions and to write about film with precision and insight, drawing on theoretical frameworks from aesthetics, cultural theory, semiotics and political thought. Graduates of film studies move into careers in broadcasting, journalism, arts administration, film criticism, public relations, education, marketing and the wider creative and cultural industries. The analytical and communication skills developed through studying film are valued wherever organisations need people who can interpret complex material, construct persuasive arguments and engage with diverse audiences. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in film studies, media, cultural studies or related disciplines, developing specialist expertise for research, curatorial or professional roles in film and media.
