About this course

Film as a discipline encompasses both the art of making moving image work and the critical analysis of cinema as one of the most powerful cultural forms of the modern era. It draws on aesthetics, history, cultural theory and the technical craft of production, asking how films create meaning, what they reveal about the societies that make and watch them, and how the tools of filmmaking can be used to express ideas and stories that could not exist in any other medium. At the University of Kent the programme is built with professional practice at its core, developing skills across directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, sound design, analysis, curation, programming and marketing. You will work with industry-standard equipment and facilities, including a fully equipped film studio, sound studio, production design workshop and individual edit suites, as well as the university's own cinema. Practical projects are designed to reflect the realities of professional production, so you graduate with a portfolio of creative work alongside your critical and analytical training. The programme runs over three years full time. Film graduates move into careers across the creative industries in a wide range of roles. Production companies, broadcasters, independent film and documentary production, post-production facilities, festival programming, film criticism, marketing and distribution all offer routes for graduates who combine creative skill with analytical understanding. Others move into screen education, arts administration, archive work and cultural journalism. The critical and communication skills developed through film study transfer broadly into media, advertising, publishing and the public sector. Postgraduate study in film production, film studies, screen industries or media management is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
