MA Film & Visual Culture and Spanish & Latin American Studies (4yrs)
About this course
Film and visual culture combined with Spanish and Latin American studies is a degree that connects two of the most culturally rich and globally significant fields of contemporary study. Film and visual culture offers rigorous training in the history and theory of the moving image, asking how films and visual media communicate, what ideological and aesthetic choices they embody, and what they reveal about the cultures that produce and consume them. Spanish and Latin American studies gives you direct linguistic and cultural access to a tradition whose contribution to world cinema and visual art is extraordinary, from the surrealism of Buñuel to contemporary Brazilian and Mexican cinema. At Aberdeen this four-year full-time degree combines top-rated study of the Spanish language with in-depth engagement with the literature, history, and cultures of Spain and Latin America, including their cinema, alongside a comprehensive training in film and visual culture theory and history. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you immersive experience in a Spanish-speaking country and the opportunity to engage with film and cultural life there directly. The combination adds international possibilities to careers in the creative arts and media, and the linguistic and cultural competence you develop opens doors in business, tourism, and many other international sectors. Graduates go on to careers in film and television production and criticism, arts administration, education, journalism, translation, cultural policy, and roles in organisations with interests in the Spanish-speaking world. Many also pursue careers in international business, tourism, and cultural diplomacy where the combination of visual culture knowledge and Spanish-language ability is a distinctive advantage. Postgraduate study in film studies, Spanish, or Latin American studies is a natural continuation.
