BA Finance
About this course
Finance is a discipline concerned with understanding how money flows through economies, how financial assets are valued, how organisations make capital decisions, and how risk is measured and managed. It draws on economic theory, mathematical modelling, and empirical analysis to address questions that are central to the operation of modern markets: how should a firm choose between investment projects, how are bonds and equities priced, what determines the risk and return of a portfolio, and how do derivatives work? These questions matter not only to financial professionals but to anyone seeking to understand the economic forces that shape investment, growth, and stability. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year, full-time BA (Hons) Finance degree gives you comprehensive knowledge of the principles of investment and value, business finance and decision-making, and the analysis of bonds, shares, and derivatives. You will build both theoretical understanding and quantitative competence, developing the capacity to analyse financial data, evaluate corporate and investment decisions, and understand the workings of financial markets. The degree includes the option of a year abroad, extending your academic experience internationally and giving you exposure to financial markets and institutions in other contexts. Finance graduates are consistently in demand across the financial services sector. Banking, investment management, corporate finance, financial analysis, risk management, pension fund management, and insurance are all natural destinations, while the analytical and quantitative skills of a finance degree are also valued in consultancy, the civil service, and roles at the interface between finance and technology. Many graduates also progress to professional qualifications, including the CFA, and to postgraduate study in finance, financial economics, or business, for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
