About this course
Fine art mixed media sits at the intersection of multiple creative practices, refusing to be defined by a single technique or tradition. Where conventional fine art programmes might be organised around painting or sculpture, mixed media practice encourages you to move across boundaries, combining materials, processes and ideas in ways that are driven by concept and context rather than medium alone. This is a discipline that takes the expanded field of contemporary art seriously, asking what it means to make work in a world saturated with images, objects and digital forms. At the University of Westminster, this part-time programme is designed to support exactly that kind of open, exploratory practice. You will have the opportunity to develop work that crosses disciplines within the ever-expanding territory of contemporary fine art. That might mean combining drawing and video, working with found objects and digital print, or developing installation and performance-based approaches. Throughout, you will be encouraged to develop your own critical and artistic voice, supported by regular critique, studio discussion and engagement with contemporary art contexts. The programme places a strong emphasis on independent thinking and the ability to articulate the ideas behind your work as clearly as you can make the work itself. Graduates from fine art mixed media programmes go on to a wide range of outcomes. Studio practice and exhibiting professionally is one route, and many graduates continue to develop their work independently while building a career in related fields. Roles in arts administration, curatorial work, arts education and community arts are common. Creative industries employers in areas such as graphic design, film, advertising and set design also value the practical and conceptual skills that a fine art education develops. Postgraduate study at Masters level, in fine art or related disciplines, is a further option for those who want to pursue research-based or teaching careers in the arts.
