About this course

Printmaking is one of the oldest and most technically diverse of the fine art disciplines, encompassing relief printing, intaglio, screenprinting, lithography, and digital print processes, as well as the hybrid and experimental approaches that contemporary practitioners have developed from these traditions. It is a discipline with a rich historical connection to the dissemination of images and ideas, from Durer and Rembrandt to Warhol and Hockney, and it remains a vital and evolving area of contemporary art practice, valued for its capacity to produce multiples and engage with questions of reproduction, process, and materiality. At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time degree prepares you for a variety of rewarding creative career paths through rigorous studio-based training in the theory and practice of printmaking. You will develop technical skills across a range of print media alongside the critical and conceptual development needed to sustain an independent artistic practice. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement, giving you professional experience within the degree. Possible career directions include professional artist, gallery owner, art therapist, conservator, and art consultant. Graduates of fine art printmaking programmes develop careers as professional artists exhibiting in gallery and public contexts, as well as in arts education, community arts, editorial illustration, art therapy, conservation, and arts administration. The technical breadth and conceptual rigour of a printmaking degree is valued by employers in the creative industries and cultural sector. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in fine art or arts practice to develop a more specialised creative direction.
