BA Fine Art
About this course
Fine art at degree level is concerned with the development of an independent creative practice that engages seriously with contemporary artistic thinking and the history of art. It is not a fixed curriculum but an evolving conversation between student artists, tutors, critics and peers, in which students are expected to develop their own artistic voice, to take risks with their work and to situate what they are doing within a broader cultural and critical context. Fine art education at its best produces artists who can think, make and articulate their practice with confidence and who understand the wider world in which contemporary art is produced and received. At Chelsea College of Arts, part of University of the Arts London, the BA Fine Art programme brings together students, artists, curators and writers to examine what contemporary fine art practice is and to help forge its future. The ethos of the programme is experimental thinking and making things happen, and the college's location in London places you in immediate proximity to one of the world's most active and internationally significant art scenes. You will develop your practice across a range of media and approaches, supported by critical discussion, tutorials, critique and the rich intellectual environment that Chelsea offers. The programme's entry tariff reflects the high level of demand and the portfolio-based selection process that characterises fine art admissions. Fine art graduates work as practising artists, often combining studio practice with other employment in arts organisations, education, curation, gallery management, arts administration, illustration and design. The critical and creative thinking skills developed through a fine art degree are also valued in contexts ranging from art direction and advertising to cultural journalism and community arts. Postgraduate study in fine art, curating or art education is a common route for those who want to develop their practice or move into academic or curatorial careers.
