BA Fine Art
About this course
Fine art is the practice of making work that operates in the space between ideas and materials, using drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, installation, or digital media to engage with questions that cannot be resolved through words alone. It is a discipline that demands both technical skill and conceptual rigour, and that asks students to develop a genuine and personal relationship with their own practice rather than simply learning a set of techniques. At its best, fine art education transforms how you see, think, and make. At the University of Suffolk this three-year full-time programme provides a diverse and vibrant creative community in which students engage actively in both critical practice and practical skills. You will develop your own artistic voice in dialogue with the work of other practitioners, past and present, while building technical competence across a range of media. Critical and contextual study is integral to the programme, developing your ability to articulate and defend your own practice, to engage with the history and theory of contemporary art, and to situate your work in its wider cultural and intellectual context. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects the portfolio-oriented and broadly accessible character of the programme. You will develop creative confidence, research and analytical skills, the ability to manage and communicate a sustained body of work, and the professional self-discipline that an artistic career requires. Graduates pursue careers as artists, illustrators, art educators, community arts practitioners, gallery and museum professionals, curators, art technicians, and creative directors. Many build portfolio careers that combine their own practice with related professional activity. Postgraduate study in fine art, arts practice, or curatorial studies is a well-established path for those who want to develop their practice further or move into teaching or research.
