BSc Forensic Psychology with Foundation Year
About this course
Forensic psychology applies the methods and knowledge of psychological science to legal and criminal justice contexts. It examines how psychological factors influence criminal behaviour, how witnesses, victims and suspects respond to crime and investigation, how offenders are assessed and treated, and how psychological evidence is gathered and presented in legal proceedings. As a discipline it requires both rigorous scientific training in psychology and specialist knowledge of the criminal justice system, the legal framework within which forensic psychologists operate and the specific assessment and intervention skills the profession demands. At York St John University, this four-year BSc with foundation year is accredited by the British Psychological Society. The foundation year allows students who need additional preparation to build the academic and scientific foundations needed before progressing into the full degree. You will apply psychological science to the study of crime from the perspectives of victims, perpetrators and criminal justice professionals, conducting research in dedicated laboratories across different areas of psychology including forensic psychology itself. A placement year gives you direct professional experience in a relevant clinical or criminal justice context, a year abroad extends your academic and international formation, and work placement opportunities are integrated throughout. Graduates of forensic psychology programmes are well positioned for careers in the criminal justice system, mental health services and research. Roles as psychology assistants, researchers, probation officers, prison officers, victim support workers and community rehabilitation professionals are common early career destinations. The BPS accreditation provides the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the essential first step for those who wish to train as forensic psychologists through postgraduate professional doctoral programmes. Some graduates pursue careers in research, policy or academia, while others move into adjacent professions such as social work or healthcare, where psychological understanding is directly relevant.
