BSc Forensic Science
About this course
Forensic science applies scientific methods and principles to the investigation of crime and to the preparation and presentation of evidence in legal proceedings. It draws on chemistry, biology, physics, and other disciplines to analyse physical evidence, identify substances, examine traces, profile DNA, determine causes of death, and reconstruct events, all in ways that can withstand the rigorous scrutiny of the courtroom. It is a field where precision, integrity, and the ability to communicate technical findings to non-specialist audiences are as important as scientific competence. At the University of Derby, this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year and benefits from state-of-the-art Bioscience Superlab and Research Lab facilities opened in 2025, equipped with cutting-edge technology and designed to provide sector-relevant practical experience. You will develop skills in crime scene examination, analytical chemistry, biological evidence analysis, toxicology, and the interpretation of forensic findings, alongside the scientific and professional knowledge that forensic practice requires. A sandwich year, year abroad option, and work placements are all available, giving you professional experience in forensic science laboratories, police services, or related organisations. Graduates go on to careers in forensic science laboratories, police forensic units, environmental testing, pharmaceutical quality control, analytical chemistry, and the wider biological and chemical sciences sectors. Many pursue postgraduate study in forensic science, analytical chemistry, or criminal justice, and some move into roles in crime scene investigation, digital forensics, or toxicology. The combination of scientific rigour and attention to evidence that forensic science develops is also valued in research, regulatory, and compliance roles across the life sciences and chemical industries.
