BSc Forensic Sciences Family (Extended Degree)
About this course
Forensic science applies the principles and methods of the natural sciences to the investigation of crime and the preparation of evidence for legal proceedings. It draws on biology, chemistry, physics and a range of specialist disciplines to examine physical evidence, whether that is trace material at a scene, biological samples, questioned documents, digital evidence or fire debris, and to provide scientific conclusions that can withstand scrutiny in court. It is a discipline that demands both scientific rigour and an understanding of the legal and procedural contexts in which forensic evidence operates. Northumbria University's extended degree in forensic sciences runs over four years of full-time study, giving you more time than a standard three-year degree to develop depth and breadth across this demanding discipline. A sandwich year in industry, a year abroad and embedded work placement are all incorporated, ensuring you graduate with substantial professional and international experience alongside your scientific training. The sandwich year in particular provides extended professional experience within a forensic laboratory, criminal justice organisation or related scientific setting, which is highly valuable in a competitive field where practical experience matters significantly. The programme covers crime scene examination, forensic biology, toxicology, analytical chemistry, digital forensics and the legal and evidential frameworks that govern forensic practice. Forensic science trains careful scientific methodology, the ability to apply analytical techniques to complex and often incomplete evidence, and the precision and reliability that legal scrutiny of scientific conclusions demands. Critical thinking and attention to detail are central throughout. Graduates pursue careers in forensic laboratories, police scientific support, toxicology, digital forensics, environmental forensics, and roles supporting the criminal justice system in the UK and internationally. Postgraduate study in forensic science or a related specialist area is available for those wishing to develop expertise further.
