BA French and Psychology
About this course
French is a major international language spoken by more than 100 million people as a first language and by more than 60 million more as a second language, with a presence across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond. Pairing it with psychology, the scientific study of mind and behaviour, creates a degree that combines cultural breadth with analytical rigour, giving you two very different but complementary ways of understanding human experience. Over four years of full-time study at the University of Strathclyde, you will develop genuine linguistic fluency in French alongside the ability to read, speak, and write in an academic and professional register, while building a thorough grounding in psychological science covering areas such as cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social behaviour, research methods, and statistical analysis. The two disciplines sit together productively: the study of language raises questions about cognition, identity, and culture that psychology can help answer, while psychological literacy makes you a more perceptive reader and communicator in any language. A typical tariff of 200 points reflects the competitive nature of this combined degree. The careers available to graduates of this combination are broad. Many go into roles that require both linguistic competence and interpersonal or analytical skills, such as international human resources, counselling and mental health support, market research, translation and intercultural communication, and roles in international organisations. Teaching French is another well-trodden path. For those who want to continue their studies, the degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate work in psychology, psycholinguistics, clinical or educational psychology, or French and francophone studies.
