About this course

Combining French with the academic study of religion offers an unusually broad intellectual foundation, pairing a living European language and culture with one of the oldest and most wide-ranging fields of enquiry in the humanities. French brings you access not just to France but to a global Francophone world spanning Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, and the Pacific, and the language carries a literary, philosophical, and cultural heritage of enormous richness. Religious studies, meanwhile, asks fundamental questions about meaning, belief, community, ethics, and the sacred, exploring traditions from Christianity and Islam to Buddhism, Hinduism, and indigenous religions across the world. At the University of Stirling this four-year programme develops your French language proficiency across speaking, writing, reading, and listening, alongside engagement with French literature, culture, film, and society. Your study of religion will introduce you to major traditions, key thinkers, and the central methodological debates in the field, from history and anthropology to philosophy of religion and textual study. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to live and study in a French-speaking country, significantly deepening your language fluency and cultural understanding in ways that classroom study alone cannot replicate. This combination opens a wide range of careers. Teaching is a natural destination for many, and French remains a valued qualification in secondary education. The broad cultural and ethical awareness the religious studies component provides is valued in diplomacy, development and humanitarian work, journalism, interfaith relations, social work, and the civil service. Publishing, translation, and the cultural sector are other common directions. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in French, religious studies, theology, or related disciplines.
