About this course

French and Russian is a combination that gives you access to two of the world's most significant literary and cultural traditions through the languages in which they were created. French connects you to one of the most influential and widely studied literary traditions in the Western world, to a philosophical culture that has shaped modernity in profound ways, and to a language spoken across five continents. Russian opens the literature of Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Bulgakov, and Akhmatova, and gives you access to a culture and a geopolitical world of enormous contemporary importance. At University College London, this four-year joint Honours programme divides your study equally between French and Russian. You will develop all four language skills in both languages, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, alongside translation and cultural study across literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics. The programme is designed to be flexible, allowing you to tailor your study toward your particular cultural or scholarly interests in each language. Your third year is spent abroad, split between two countries where your languages are spoken, which is fundamental to developing the genuine fluency and cultural confidence that serious bilingual or multilingual work requires. The typical entry tariff is 184 UCAS points. Graduates of French and Russian degree programmes from UCL are well placed for careers in translation and interpreting, international diplomacy, journalism with a focus on European or Eastern European affairs, the civil service, international business, cultural organisations, academia, and any field where multilingual competence and cross-cultural understanding give you a genuine professional edge. The combination of French and Russian covers an extraordinary range of international contexts. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in French or Russian studies, translation, linguistics, or European and Eurasian affairs.
